Health and Social Care

Students at deskAim

The aim of the one-year Pre BTEC Health and Social Care course is to provide students with an insight into the subject and prepare them for the demands of an increased internal assessment workload.

Topics covered

Term 1

  • Unit 1 – health and safety
  • Unit 2 – physical care of babies and young children

Term 2

  • Unit 3 – introduction to a healthy lifestyle
  • Unit 4 – introduction to healthy eating

Term 3

  • Unit 5 – introduction to the care of people with dementia
  • Unit 6 – importance of leisure and social activities

Assessment

All classes have mixed ability students. Students will cover six units in total, each unit will be assessed with a written internal assessment based on an assignment brief. Some examples of assessments could be written reports or in-class tests. Regular assessment will be undertaken throughout each unit, with feedback given relating to the attainment. Due to the nature of the course, all assessments will be completed within an allocated time during the lesson. The course is good preparation for the BTEC Tech Award in Health and Social Care, but it is not a requirement.

How to support at home

All students will be set regular homework using the Satchel system. This may be based on extending knowledge through research or completing revision/preparation tasks for assessments. Students will be given notice to prepare for their assessment and the criteria to be assessed will also be shared. Encouraging your child to develop good organisational skills and complete homework on time will be helpful.
