Mathematics (Edexcel)

Aim

The GCSE mathematics course comprises of two tiers of entry: Higher (grades 9–4) and foundation (grades 5–1). Nine is the highest grade available.

Topics covered

The mathematics GCSE is split into six main areas:

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Geometry
  • Measures
  • Statistics
  • Probability
  • Assessment

There will be regular school-based assessment points throughout the course in order to monitor progress and check that the students are studying at the most appropriate level. In particular, a whole-school assessment in March of Year 10 will be used to monitor progress. There is no coursework aspect to the course; students are assessed in three examinations (one non-calculator and two calculator). As well as using the mathematical skills that they have learnt, students will also be assessed on how well they can analyse problems and their ability to select the most appropriate methods to solve them.

In the new GCSE there is greater emphasis on problem-solving and mathematical reasoning. We would recommend purchasing a scientific calculator through School, as students will be expected to have one available during every lesson.

Assessment

  • GCSE: 100% Examinations: Three written papers of 1.5 hours each (two calculator and one non-calculator) taken in June of Year 11

The syllabus is Edexcel GCSE Maths (9–1): course code 1MA1.
