  • BTEC tech award in sport

students on the astroThe BTEC Tech Award in Sport is assessed through two internal components and one external exam. Components one and two use Pearson-set assignments completed under supervised conditions. These tasks are designed to apply theoretical knowledge to realistic sports situations, helping learners connect understanding with practical performance.

Component one focuses on participation in sport, including types of activity, participant needs, barriers, equipment, and planning/delivering warm-ups using basic anatomy and physiology. Component two covers components of fitness, practical participation, rules and regulations, and helping others improve performance through drills and conditioned practices. Each component is worth 60 marks and is assessed in the December/January or May/June windows.

Learners can improve their initial submissions once within 15 working days if their performance is below expectation. After marks are submitted for moderation, no further resubmissions are allowed. Retakes can only be completed in a later series using the new Pearson-set assignment and must occur before or in the same series as the external exam due to terminal assessment rules.

Component three is the external synoptic assessment, taken at the end of the course. It is a 1.5-hour written exam worth 60 marks and accounts for 40% of the qualification. It requires learners to combine knowledge from across the course to analyse performance and design ways to improve fitness and sporting outcomes. Learners can resit the exam once, but only the result from their final assessment series can be used for certification.
